New Modern Sky UK label to launch maiden EP sampler

Label’s first four signings to be showcased at Liverpool Sound City

China’s independent music titan Modern Sky Entertainment will unveil the first four signings to its new UK label with the release of a 10” vinyl sampler on May 26.

The Modern Sky UK label is headed by Dave Pichilingi, founder of Sound City. It comes after Modern Sky Entertainment inked a long-term strategic partner deal with Sound City in April 2016.

Modern Sky was founded in 1996 by Shen Li Hui in China. It is now the largest independent record label in China as well as being promoter of the largest music festivals in the territory under the banner of Strawberry Festivals. Alongside its Beijing HQ, the company also has an office in New York.

The UK sampler EP will be the premiere offering from a string of northern signings and signals a busy opening to 2017 for the Liverpool-based independent record label, which has a growing roster of artists.

The sampler, also available on Spotify, will feature Glasgow quartet Catholic Action, hotly-tipped Liverpool outfit Violet Youth, Blackburn’s Fuss and Wigan-based singer/songwriter Pixey.

David Pichilingi, CEO of Modern Sky UK, said: “The ethos of our label is to bring back a strong sense of love, passion and deeply sarcastic humour into everything we do. From the music through to the typography. In a world of mediocrity, we want to be a beacon for the right kind of artists and bands.”

The very limited run of heavyweight 10” vinyl comes with a range of different coloured sleeves that, linking to their parent company, are inspired by the colours of the Chinese elements.

To coincide with the label launch, the four artists featured on the EP will play a special Modern Sky UK Late Night Label Party event at Liverpool Sound City. The gig takes place on May 27 at The North Shore Troubadour, available to all Saturday and Weekend Sound City Passes.
