BIMM University partners with DAACI and Lewis Silkin LLP to Advance Ethical AI in Music 02 May 2024
Championing Ethical Integration and Fair Licensing Students and Lecturers to Contribute
Specialist Songwriting and Production Skills
BIMM University, one of Europe’s leading creative arts universities, is proud to announce its collaboration with DAACI, the inventors and developers of a comprehensive and ethical AI music ecosystem, and Lewis Silkin LLP, in a ground-breaking AI research programme funded by an Innovate UK grant.
The project aims to establish an ethical and transparent compliance mechanism for AI-generated music works. With nearly £1m in funding from the Innovate Bridge AI Grant, the project sets out to address licensing uncertainties and promote fair treatment for creators and rights holders in the emerging Web3.0 world.
BIMM will contribute testing activities and specialist songwriting and production input through its innovative BIMM University AI_Labs programme, while Lewis Silkin LLP will offer vital market insight into ethical AI and sustainable reward models.
David Jones-Owen, CEO and Vice Chancellor of BIMM University, reaffirmed the institution's dedication to preparing students and lecturers for the AI-driven future "Our mission is clear," he emphasised. "We want to comprehensively understand the profound impact AI is having on the creative industries and, by extension, our academic institution.”
He elaborated, "We are proud to partner with DAACI and Lewis Silkin on this groundbreaking project, which represents a significant advancement in the ethical integration of music and AI. By contributing our expertise and resources through BIMM University AI_Labs, we aim to support the development of innovative solutions that will benefit the entire music industry.”
"Collaborating with BIMM University on this initiative is a testament to our joint commitment to ethical innovation in music and AI. Together, we are set to revolutionise the industry by leveraging pioneering technology and expertise. Through this partnership, we strive to pave the way for transformative solutions that uphold integrity while driving progress.” comments Rachel Lyske, DAACI, CEO.
The collaboration extends BIMM’s ongoing strategy of an ethical, analytical, and collaborative approach to engaging with AI. Through the launch of the University’s AI-Labs, partnerships with DAACI and Lewis Silkin LLP, and the recent appointment of Warren Barkley, Cloud AI Leader at Google, as Visiting Professor, BIMM University is leading the creative industry’s academic voice in shaping the development of collaborative AI music composition tools and supporting the establishment of ethical and legal processes for fair licensing of content.
This partnership represents a significant stride toward the ethical integration and development of music and AI, ushering in a new era of diverse and inclusive music production while equipping the next generation of creatives with the skills to preserve their authentic creativity in an AI-enhanced world.
