Silva Screen Music Group acquires Sirocco jazz catalogue 23 Apr 2019
A welcome return of a much loved and respected Jazz label.
On 1st May 2019, Sirocco will be joining Silva Screen Music Group’s highly acclaimed jazz labels, CMP and Hip Bop. Unavailable both digitally and physically for four years (including vinyl formats and streaming platforms), the entire Sirocco catalogue is currently ready to be re-released through Silva Screen Music Group.
About Sirocco Music:
Formed in 1997 by John Priestley, Sirocco Music was a labour of love, influenced by the melting-pot era of the 60s; from the Beatles and Rolling Stones to the blues of Big Bill Broonzy, T Bone Walker and Nina Simone. Always passionate about the music and artists, Priestley started collecting jazz records after hearing the Jazz at the Phil album. By the end of the sixties, his focus was on Coltrane and Miles Davis.
As a great jazz fan, Priestley frequented the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz club and got to know Ronnie Scott and his partner Pete King, as well as a host of jazz artists appearing in the club. Having an opportunity to talk to them, he quickly realised that highly-talented musicians often struggle to maintain continuous employment, but that a release of an album can lead to many months of work around the world. Encouraged by Ronnie and Pete, John Priestley started Sirocco jazz label to wide critical acclaim and the recordings were soon being distributed to critical acclaim in America, Japan, Europe and Australia.
Over the years many leading artists were attracted to the label. Some artists involved with Sirocco included Geri Allen, Buster Williams, Eddie Henderson, Joe Locke and Robin Eubanks, with Wynton Marsalis, Bob Berg, John Patitucci, Michael Brecker, and the great Dianne Reeves.
Robin Eubanks' Wake-up-Call was the very first Sirocco release, and it set the exceptionally high standard for both the creative performance and quality of recording. As an independent label, Sirocco was able to offer a musical platform for some of the world's leading jazz artists, and do it within the context of the material they wanted to have documented. Sirocco also provided a starting
point for those that fell under the heading of "talent deserving wider recognition". Every leader was able to choose the musicians they want to record with and, to-date, there have been many instances where this has led to the finished recording being regarded as a landmark example of the artists’ work. Early examples included Craig Handy's Reflections in Change featuring Geri Allen, Ralph Peterson's Back to Stay with Michael Brecker, and Rodney Whitaker's Yesterday Today and Tomorrow with special guests Wynton Marsalis and Dianne Reeves.
Sirocco recordings have also enjoyed critical approval for challenging jazz boundaries through Tim Garland's Storms/Nocturnes Trio, with Joe Locke and Geoffrey Keezer. Similarly, Joe Locke has very successfully blended R&B with Jazz for his highly regarded Storytelling projects Storytelling and State of Soul.
Tim Garland's Storms/Nocturnes recordings are part of a small number of trio projects that were released under the banner Serious Trio Productions. Besides the two Tim Garland recordings, the label has released Triangular 2 with David Kikoski, Gerald Cannon, and Ralph Peterson,Buster Williams' Houdini with Geri Allen, as well as Lenny White and the Henry Hey Trio recording Watershed.
